Title: Travel Setup
Post by: galumay on January 26, 2015, 05:24:06 PM
I have long searched for the perfect travelling set up for coffee, I once travelled to Bali for 2 weeks with a small esky with one of my Caravels packed in i- along with a Lido grinder and cups, tamper, funnel etc! We travelled with another couple and they thought it was hilarious - but they still lined up for a cappuccino every morning!

This time, as we were away for a year and I wanted to cart as little as possible, I said i was taking nothing with me and travelling light - but the problem is that where we are staying in Piha, i had sold jeremy a caravel and lido. So we have had great coffee ever since arriving!

My solution has been to crumble slowly, first i bought a Hausgrind, which i certainly dont need! Another high end hand grinder - but its smaller that than the Lido and its cool so I got one anyway.

Now I have just ordered a ROK Presso so the only potential step from here is a small roaster! (kidding, dear!)

The ROK arrived this morning, as did the cranking handle for the Hausgrind, i promptly unpacked everything and chucked some beans in the Hausgrind to do a test pour, but nothing seemed to happen, no matter how i cranked, rattled, shook, nothing! No grinding action!

I stripped the grinder and discovered the outer burr was spinning because the grub screw that is designed to hold the outer burr in place was missing in action! So it was back to the LIDO and email Peter at Knock for the dimensions of the said grub screw!

Anyway, onto the ROK, first pull, no crema, pretty awful, set the grinder a bit finer, increased the dose size and wallah! A lovely double shot with nice crema!

I have to try to find a suitable glass to pull shots into so I can take a photo!

slowly dialling it in, it will never pull sublime godshots like the Caravel, but thats just a function of design. Its still going to be miles better than a stove top or french press for a travel setup,
